Hamann School Mathematics Competition for SPE Prizes
The Society of Petroleum Engineers(SPE)
is an international technical/professional organisation dedicated to
the advancement of technology associated with the recovery of energy
resources from well-bores. The South Australian section of the SPE is
sponsoring the SA School Mathematics Competition as part of its
commitment to the education of young people and to raise awareness of
the Society's vocation, the professional of Petroleum Engineer. The SPE
considers that a career as a Petroleum Engineer offers exciting
opportunities to work throughout the world in one of the many facets of
the Oil and Gas Industry.
aim of the competition is to encourage interested and motivated students
to enjoy the challenge of non-standard problems. While some of the
questions require extended knowledge and responses, the new format of
the 15 question papers aims to give a wide range of students the
opportunity to achieve some success.
Association believes this competition to be a most important student
activity and one in which all schools should have participants.
The School Mathematics Competition will be held in schools on Wednesday 15th March 2017.
It is for South Australian students in Years 6 - 12. Four papers will be set as indicated below.
Primary of 1 hour for students in Years 6 – 7
Junior Paper of 1.5 hours for students in Year 7 – 8
Intermediate Paper of 1.5 hours for students in Years 9 – 10
Senior Paper of 1.5 hours for students in Years 11 – 12
Note: Year 7's may do either paper Primary or Junior
Note: the use of scientific & graphic calculators is permitted for all papers.
Format for 2017 Competitions
Each paper will contain 20 questions
1 - 10 (3 marks each)
11 - 15 (4 marks each)
16 - 20 (5 marks each)

Questions 16-20 / Full working of solutions
Senior Paper- Full working of all solutions required
Each year about 1800 students sit for the SA School Mathematics
Competition sponsored by The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). There
is considerable input required from teachers to keep this very
successful competition running smoothly. The process involves:
the setting of four papers
organisation of student workshop sessions
the Presentation Night
Metropolitan Schools entering students are required to nominate teachers
to help with the workshop evening and marking of each of the papers.

Prizes are awarded for each division at Judges’ discretion. Monetary
prizes donated by SPE are awarded to the Top Ten Students. Distinction
Certificates, Credit Certificates, Judges’ Commendation and Judges’
Encouragement Certificates are awarded as judged. Participation
Certificates are awarded to all entrants.
Winners and their parents are invited to the Presentation Night to be held on 21st June 2017 (date to be confirmed) from 7.30pm – 9.30pm (approx.) at Dorothy Yates Hall, Pembroke School, Holden Street, Kensington Gardens.
It is wise to use past competitions as practice examples. The SMC Past Papers will be available for sale at the MASA Office.
The competition entry fee is $3.00 per student (GST included). Please
complete the enclosed entry form and forward it to MASA as soon as
possible. Entries close on Tuesday 28th February, 2017.
